A fond farewell 2023: with mixed emotions

SophieRobinsonPR HR 220

Wow what a year! But before I sign off it’s a moment to pause for breath.  This is the final blog post, coupled with the last episode of the Great Indoors podcast, 2023 is soon to be over and out.  Before I slip on my sheepskin slippers and pour myself a large glass, I thought I would take a minute reflect with you all on what this year has looked like for me, before we get a glimmer for what’s in store…

The highlights

In terms of the house this has been a HUGE year! I have finally got my dream kitchen. When we bought our house back in 2016 we had big plans to reorganise the interior but had assumed it would take the shape of a kitchen extension.  The huge hike in building materials, labour and then our mortgage was the final straw we were forced to shelve that plan. *Cue big sobs* With this crushing hard truth, I got creative and realised we didn’t necessarily need more space, just the right space. So, the affordable solution was to switch our lavishly large living room and pokey dark kitchen over with each other.  It’s finally made me fall in love with my house at last, and a big lesson, perhaps for all of us, is to reconsider how we can improve what we already have before we call the builders in. I’m so excited to share Christmas with our friends and family in the new space. It looks like with some last minute editions we are up to 12 so it will be testing the rooms capacity to the max!

Sophie standing, with a big smile on her face at her kitchen sink. Hands rested on the glistening marble worktop, on top of the light pink kitchen cabinets. Wallpaper in the background is white and floral, with the sunlight streaming in through the window on the other side of the sink.

I worked with Magnet on my Dream Kitchen and its a thing that dreams are made of!

What I’m most proud of

My career has reached new highs this year with the launch of my first ever product collaboration with the wonderful team over at Harlequin. This has been the absolute dream of a project and the launch has been a huge success, testament to how ready the world is to ditch the griege and embrace the joy of colour and pattern. After 25 years in the industry is actually collaborate on a collection and launch it in my name has been a huge honour and a priveledge and I learnt so much working alongside the talented team at the Harlequin studio. And lets just give myself a high five for the plastic conservatory transformation while we’re here!

Large conservatory filled with colour sofas, armchairs, cushions and rugs. On the windows are green patterned roman blinds, half down to reveal some sunlight and on the ceiling floral fabric is draped across the glass roof to create a cosy atmosphere.

The conservatory is now tented in glorious pattern. All fabrics available from my collection with Harlequin

What I’ve learned

It’s been a huge year of personal growth for me as I continue to grow my business and take most of the financial strain for our family during these turbulent times. I’m not going to lie, the anxiety has been the worst I’ve ever known, coupled with managing my fluctuating peri-menopausal symptoms! My Mum continues to struggle with long-covid, my son has changed schools and my husband had a  health scare that’s knocked him off his perch. What I’ve learned this year is I can do hard things, get through it with resilience and grow even stronger with the support of some incredible people and being utterly inspired by my fellow female entrepreneurs. Mid-life is absolutely not for beginners and it takes an army. And yet it is empowering to take control of your financial health and I am loving growing my business with all the possibilities that are opening up for me. However I’ve also learned that to deliver  I need to prioritise my health both physical and mental. So that’s top of the list going into 2024! Who’s with me?! I’m also wondering if this is something you’d like me to talk about more in 2024, alongside the usual interiors inspiration? One thing I will say is that if you have been struggling this year, you are not alone.

Sophie, dressed in colourful green blouse with pink skirt, is talking to an attendee at her workshop with a moodboard on the desk in front of them.

What’s on the horizon

My business looks like it’s set to go from strength to strength with more exciting collaborations in the pipeline for 2024 and beyond which will continue to champion my love of colourful interiors. I’ve recently recruited a new assistant to work alongside me. Natalie has a wealth of experience running online courses so I’m aiming to take the interior design school to the next level with her by my side. We have planned some great new content to add to the existing courses, all with the aim to help you take your interior design game to the next level, keep you inspired, creative and of course feeling confident to embrace colour!

What about you?

Well, I’ve got heaps of gorgeous content lined up for you! From more product lines to furnish your home with, more dedicated blog posts and podcasts to keep you inspired and informed, plus live webinars and workshops to keep us colour lovers feeling motivated and connected. Due to popular demand there are plans afoot to host another retreat to the amazing Marrakech later in the year, so as a subscriber, you will be the first to find out more!

I’ll be kicking off the year with my popular annual Vision Board masterclass on the 4th January to gently lift the fog and start looking head with optimism, intention and creativity. Then there is the big January course sale across the entire design school, my biggest discount of the year. Sale goes live on the 26th December so keep your eyes peeled for that!

Attendees at a workshop sit at desks, listening with smiles on their faces to Sophie.

I’d love to know how you are feeling moving into 2024.

What are you most proud of?

What life lessons have your learned?

What can’t you wait to leave behind you and then step into?

Are you ready to create a new vision for yourself and your home?

The period between Christmas and New Year is a good time to gently reflect. But I resist dwelling too much. For now it’s time to wrap up work, wrap up presents then stop, cosy up, eat well and spend time with those you love. I’ll be binge watching cheesy Christmas movies, wearing comfy clothes (with not a scratchy sequin in sight) and thanking my lucky stars. Wishing you and yours a lovely, restful, gentle, and of course, colourful Christmas. X

Thanks for being part of this journey. And I’ll be back to invigorate and inspire you in the New Year!

Want to add a bolt of joyful colour? There is no b Want to add a bolt of joyful colour? There is no better way than fresh flowers. I picked these Spring blooms up on my supermarket shop. I love this time of year as flowers are so abundant and affordable. Here’s how to make a stylish display with just a few bunches.

- First choose a selection of vessels. I’m theming mine with these striped jugs I got in Marrakech
- Next trim back excess leaves and snip off the stem ends at a slight angle
- For impact keep them bunched together in groups rather than mixing them up
- Group them all together, playing with different heights and Voila! 💐

Have a gorgeous bank holiday! Hope you’re doing something nice x
It all started with one bold wallpaper roll… and It all started with one bold wallpaper roll… and ended in a master bedroom that’s 100% me, and maybe a little extra.

Every pattern, colour, texture and trim was chosen to bring joy. Designing a maximalist space isn’t about throwing everything at the walls - it’s about layering with purpose, and creating
a room that feels like you.

If you’re dreaming of a home that’s full of you, my “How to Create a Maximalist Interior” online course is 25% off until the end of May. Comment MAYJOY and i’ll send you the link!

Feeling stuck on how to make your home flow - with Feeling stuck on how to make your home flow - without it all looking the same?
You’re not alone. One of the biggest challenges with bold, maximalist decorating is getting that sweet spot where every room feels unique and still sings in harmony with the rest of the
house.

This week, I opened up my home to guests at my VIP Masterclass — and since it was looking unusually spick and span(!), I thought I’d give you a rare peek too. What you’ll see is
colour, pattern, and personality in every corner… but behind the scenes? There’s a very intentional design process holding it all together.

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed by all the decisions, unsure where to start, or terrified of making a mistake, my online course ‘How to Create Maximalist Interiors’ is designed to take that fear off your shoulders. I’ll guide you, step by step, through how I create spaces that
feel joyful, cohesive and so very you.

✨ Want to see what’s possible — and learn how to make it happen in your own home? Comment MAYJOY25 and I’ll DM you the link. The course is 25% off throughout May, so it’s a brilliant time to dive in.

Don’t underestimate the potential of small space Don’t underestimate the potential of small spaces. While we are a nation obsessed with knocking walls down and living in open plan (echoey) spaces, I’d go so far to say, when it comes to decorating, small rooms are my absolute fave! Little rooms are where you can really turn up the dial, because at face value they are bland, underwhelming and quite often overlooked. But turn your mind to creating jewel-box fabulousness, inject plush textures, fabulous patterns and standout accessories and the transformation isn’t only fast but exceeds all expectations.

Here are a few small spaces I’ve designed, that may be small—but they pack a serious punch.

If like me you hate your shiny white UPVC windows If like me you hate your shiny white UPVC windows then this tip is for you!

I painted all of ours, inside and out, and it totally transformed our home (costing hundreds of pounds on paint rather than thousands of pounds replacing them with more traditional timber that would suit the Victorian character of our house better).
The best thing about painting UVPC is with the right primer, there is no sanding or lengthy preparation. It’s important to make sure the frames are clean and dry, and then on with the All Surface Primer, which then ensures that the exterior acrylic eggshell, in a colour of your
choice, can easily go on top. For many the beauty of UVPC windows is they don’t need decorating or maintaining, unlike timber windows. However, while these have not flaked or scratched yet (three
years in) I know they will need a lick of paint at some point. But UVPC is a more stable substrate to traditional timber which cracks and swells, so the maintenance will be far less.

And heres the best bit… you can’t tell the difference!

Works on Front doors and conservatories too! Would you try it? Let me know in the comments!

We used an All surface primer, mixed to match the top coat, of External eggshell in Lamp Black. Walls painted in masonry paint, in Lamp Black. All products @littlegreenepaintcompany

I don’t know who needs to hear this today, but I I don’t know who needs to hear this today, but I’ve needed to hear it again and again this past year.

This little affirmation has carried me through some of the hardest moments of my life; navigating a divorce, facing the possibility of losing my home, and somehow still showing up for my business, my family, and my creativity.

And here’s the thing: I didn’t lose my home. 🏡 I’m keeping it. 🙌 That’s the biggest takeaway for me. Because in the midst of fear and uncertainty, I held on to hope. I kept creating. I kept believing.

Stress and anxiety can really crush creativity. They make us shrink, second-guess, and settle for less than we deserve. But when we give ourselves even the tiniest flicker of faith, that’s when the magic can return.

So if there’s something you’re holding on for, don’t let go. Keep the faith. You’ve absolutely got this.

And if someone you love needs that reminder too — feel free to share this with them.
