The Amara Interior Blog Awards 2016

113 johnnassari

I was thrilled to be invited to host the prestigious Amara Interior Blog awards again this year. It’s an absolute honour and a joy to be in a crowd of fellow interior design fanatics. Not to mention the glamour and the outfits and the wonderful cocktails put on my the incredible Ham Yard hotel. (And if you want to see a mouthwatering interior scheme, then check in here. I love it!)

The Interior Blog awards is an incredibly important date in the design calendar. It’s a rare opportunity for us to be able to put a face to many of the blogs that we love so much. The blogs that inform, inspire and keep us entertained. And an astonishing 750 unique blogs were put up for the awards this year and shortlisted and then judged by the best in the business.

So a lot of work goes into these blogs. And I mean a lot of work, all supported by hot instagram feeds,  tweets, YouTube videos and facebook posts. They really help keep the whole interior design community connected. And what I love most about the blogging community, is that it’s completely democratic. No dictating editorial departments, just people with  passion who are putting it out there and finding an audience. I love the wide breadth of styles that are blogged about and topics that are shared. And unlike other publishing streams there is no right and wrong in the blog world. It’s true Design Democracy and I love it for the celebration of the individual.

And that’s what makes blogging special. It’s rarely about large editorial departments. It’s more often penned in the spare bedroom after the kids are in bed or the work emails have been sent that these little gems of design inspiration are rippled out over the internet. They bring together communities of like-minded people, they inspire,  educate but also share. Bloggers share a part of themselves and for me I think that’s the real gem of blogging. Real people with a real story or opinion is what makes blogging so exciting.

And its one of the warmest and friendliest communities you’ll know.

Ten things I learned about collecting art from my Ten things I learned about collecting art from my recent trip to @broadwicksoho .
What an extraordinary afternoon and a total treat to have two of the most brilliant experts in art curation at my disposal, to ask them anything, and to be surrounded by Broadwick Soho’s incredible interiors.

I hosted a relaxed hotel tour and lunch with @vanessagbranson , renowned curator and the creative force behind the art at @elfennmarrakech , and @jonathan_brook , who curates Broadwick Soho’s very special collection. Jonathan talked us through the pieces he chose to complete the lavish interiors designed by his partner, renowned interior designer @martinbrudnizki

It was also such a joy to share the experience with dear friends from my Colour Collective. More dates for similarly inspiring lunches are coming soon - watch this space.
Do you ever find yourself agonising over pattern? Do you ever find yourself agonising over pattern? It can feel completely overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to mix more than one print in a room. Here’s how I think about it, using my own bedroom as the example. I always start with a hero fabric or wallpaper that has every colour I want to use somewhere in it, then build out from there. This can be a mix of pattern types rather than just florals on repeat, playing with scale so a big blousy print sits against something finer. Get your colour story locked down first and honestly, there’s no limit to how much you can layer in after that.

Save this for the next time you’re standing in a shop with three fabrics in your hands unsure if they’ll work together!
A fabulous late summer celebration dressed in pink A fabulous late summer celebration dressed in pink, pink and more pink!

My Mum, in typically stubborn fashion, insisted she didn’t want a fuss made for her 80th. So naturally, we made a small one anyway, just close friends and family.

Look closely and you’ll find her beautiful wedding china and glassware which we brought out for the occasion. I paired the table scape with pinks to match the gorgeous floral colours on the china.

Happy birthday mum! 🌸🌸
Join me at the @harlequinfw showroom at @designcen Join me at the @harlequinfw showroom at @designcentrech to talk all things fabric for upholstery.

Choosing a fabric is something I get asked about constantly, and it can be confusing. So let’s kick off with upholstery - you need to know what makes a fabric right for a sofa or your chairs. It might be beautiful, but it also needs to be durable enough to survive the wear and tear of everyday life.

What I love about shopping for fabric in person is it gives you gorgeous inspiration, but you can also speak to a team that know fabric inside and out.

Follow these tips and you can choose colour and pattern for your home with confidence.
Art is so much more than something to fill an empt Art is so much more than something to fill an empty wall. It’s often the piece that sets the colour palette, creates the mood, tells your story and makes a house feel uniquely yours.

Here are some of my favourite ways to use art at home, from hanging it on patterned wallpaper to creating gallery walls and propping rather than hanging for a more collected feel.

💛 Save this post for the next time you’re hanging artwork or restyling a room.

I’d also love to know… are you an avid art collector? Do you buy original paintings, hunt for vintage finds, frame holiday treasures or display your children’s artwork? Let’s inspire each other in the comments.

It takes a village to make a collection… and thank It takes a village to make a collection… and thankfully mine is full of ridiculously talented people.

From the designers and makers to the photographers, stylists and glam squad, this shoot was the grand finale after months of hard work. My favourite bit? Seeing everything come together in front of the camera.

You might spot my brother @edwardrobinsonid in this reel too. He’s a stylist and Design Producer on Interior Design Masters, so pinching him for the day always feels like a result. A proper family affair.

This is my very first solo bed linen and cushion collection and I honestly can’t wait to share it with you.
