How to create a cosy autumn home

Maximalist Snug Sophie Robinson abstract artwork

Simple decor ideas for a seasonal update

Ah, autumn! I got a bit giddy last week reorganising my winter wardrobe, hanging up all my woolly jumpers, and putting the summer dresses away to rest. This has to be one of my favourite seasons because it’s all about change. The trees will shortly be turning from green into a blaze of glorious red, gold and burnt orange. Coupled with the crisp air and striking blue skies I love how the piercing autumn light scatters shards of light across the branches. The temperature is beginning to dip, and the days are getting shorter, so we naturally retreat inside our homes and cue the time to turn them into cosy little havens. Creating that inviting autumnal atmosphere goes beyond just pulling out a few blankets—it’s about layering softness, scent, and light to craft a space that wraps around you like a lovely warm hug.

Scent the scene

Let’s start with one of the most underrated elements of cosy decor: scent. It’s amazing how a perfect fragrance can completely change the mood of a room. In autumn, you’ll want to lean into earthy, grounding scents—think smoky oud, warm amber, or a touch of spicy cinnamon.

Personally, I swear by SevenSeventeen’s Black Oud candle. It’s got this deep, woodsy aroma that instantly makes me feel like I’ve stepped into a snug mountain lodge! Place it in your hallway or living room to greet you with warmth the second you walk in.

And for something safer if you’ve got little ones or pets, essential oil diffusers are great. Try blending cedarwood with a bit of orange for a fresh yet cosy scent. Pop one in the bathroom or near the kitchen to spread the autumn vibe all over the house. Honestly, a few candles and diffusers can make your home feel like the ultimate autumn retreat.

Embrace cushions, throws & rugs

Nothing says autumn quite like layering up textures. Think of chunky knits, velvet cushions, and woolly throws—all of which make your space fabulously tactile. Swapping out your lighter summer fabrics for something thicker instantly changes the vibe of your room.

Add a few oversized cushions on your sofa and throw a cosy blanket over the armchair. I invested in an electric heated blanket last year and it’s heavenly! You’ll be ready for those dark nights in no time. If you’re feeling extra cosy, layer rugs underfoot—yes, layer them! It adds an extra sense of warmth, and there’s something about the feeling of stepping onto a plush rug that just screams “cosy.” I have heavier shaggier Moroccan rugs that I roll out in winter, that get replaced by lightweight kilims come summer.

Layer that Lighting

Autumn lighting is all about creating a soft, warm glow—perfect for snuggling up on those dark evenings. The bright overhead lights that felt fine in summer suddenly feel a bit too much, don’t they? Now’s the time to add in table lamps, fairy lights, and anything that gives off a gentle, cosy luminescence.

One of my favourite tricks is placing a lamp in dark corners or above artwork to create pools of light that draw you in. I even have lamps on my kitchen worktop and island. And yes, (in reply to an Instagram comment I recently received) fairy lights aren’t just for Christmas! Drape them along your mantlepiece or even string them around a mirror for a bit of twinkly magic.

Switch up curtains, bedding & art

As the temperature drops, it is practical to switch to heavier fabrics. Replace those lightweight summer curtains with something more substantial, like velvet or thick interlined cotton fabric. You could even consider switching up the colour from pale to something richer like a deep autumnal russet red, forest green, or warm mustard yellow.

In the bedroom, swap out your light duvet for a higher tog one, and don’t forget to add an extra bed throw at the foot of the bed. Electric blankets are a dream if you really want to take the chill off! And if you’ve got the walls for it, why not switch up your artwork to reflect the season? Some botanical prints with autumn leaves or moody landscapes can make a space feel more seasonal in an instant.

Bring Nature Inside: Foliage & Autumn Displays

Bringing the outdoors in is such a simple way to celebrate the season. I love to see displays of dried leaves, branches, or even berries. You can create a stunning tablescape or centrepiece for your dining table with pumpkins, conkers, pinecones, and dahlias—everything that embodies the beautiful colour palette of autumn.

You don’t even need to spend much; foraging in your garden or nearby woods can provide you with the most beautiful pieces of nature to decorate with. I once created a centrepiece using nothing but foraged leaves and some sprigs of wild berries—it looked stunning and cost absolutely nothing! My tip is to go oversized to create a really big statement.

So while we say farewell to summer I’m ready to embrace the magic of Autumn, and the glorious change in colour that we see nature perform. I’m actually excited that my bath in the garden will soon be cold enough for my daily morning dips again! I think it’s all about getting ourselves in a positive mindset and by adding soft lighting, cosy textures, seasonal scents, and a few foraged autumnal accents, you can make your home both beautiful and practical for the colder months ahead.

What’s your favourite autumnal update? Share your ideas in the comments—I’d love to hear how you celebrate the changing season in your home!

Not going to lie, this might be one of my proudest Not going to lie, this might be one of my proudest makeovers ever…
My Dad and Mary’s modern French villa was all beige tiles, white walls and zero personality. So I did what I do best: turned it into a technicolour dreamscape inspired by the countryside views outside those gorgeous bifold doors.

Inspired by early autumn leaves, emerald green fields, and piercing blue skies we set about making the inside of their home feel as joyful as the outside … now imagine all that bottled up into wallpaper, fabrics, cushions and colour-drenched furniture.

If you’ve ever thought bold colour overwhelming or that pattern was too much for open-plan spaces… this one’s for you. Because colour and pattern sings in nature, and it can work just as well in your home decor.

End of January check-in… and yes, the struggle to End of January check-in… and yes, the struggle to stay joyful is very real right now. Dark mornings, grey skies, energy running low.

That’s exactly why our homes matter so much at this time of year. They are our sanctuary. The place that should lift your mood, calm your nervous system and make you feel held when the outside world feels a bit, how can I put this...relentless. Research shows that colour, light, beauty and nature in our homes have a direct impact on mood, wellbeing and happiness. Small, intentional changes really can shift how you feel day to day.

I’d love to know… what brings you the most joy in your home right now? A colour, a room, a plant, a view, a ritual? Share it in the comments 💛

Dark and moody colours can feel intimidating, but Dark and moody colours can feel intimidating, but my TV snug shows just how well they can work. The deep tones soften the space and create a calm, cocooning atmosphere, perfect for evenings spent watching TV, or retreating from the day.

Contrary to what you might think, this room really comes into its own in winter. Low light and long evenings make the colour feel enveloping and cosy. It’s a space that invites you to slow down, sink in, and make yourself comfortable.

I sampled so many different paints but Cordoba by Little Greene was the perfect choice for this room. It’s full of depth and warmth, and just the right amount of drama.

And if you’re thinking about taking the leap yourself, my tip is: don’t fight the natural light you have, lean into it. Don’t be shy about colour drenching walls, woodwork and ceiling so the room feels seamless and intentional. In my snug, that richness is what makes it feel cosy and complete.

There’s no place I’d rather be on chilly evenings.
How do I explain this feeling to a minimalist? To How do I explain this feeling to a minimalist?

To some people this might look like too much, but for me, maximalism isn’t excessive, it’s pure self expression. I decorate my home to reflect the way I live and that’s full of bold uplifting, joy-giving colour. Every patterned textile, every artwork, every joyful little object earns its place because it makes me feel happy.

And if I’m being honest a neutral room doesn’t make me feel calm, it makes me feel slightly depressed. My home lifts my mood, fires my creativity and gives me a little thrill every single day.

Now tell me… are you Team Minimal or Team Maximal? And what makes your heart sing at home?
There’s something about walking that has quietly h There’s something about walking that has quietly held me together this past year.

When life threw its challenges my way, my anxiety went into overdrive. I lost clarity, my head was foggy, and the overwhelm shut me down. But walking, one step in front of the other, slowly moved me in the right direction.

We all know walking is good for the body, but it’s also one of the most powerful tools for the mind. Moving helps process stuck emotions, those steady steps soothe racing thoughts, and the changing scenery opens up fresh ways of thinking. Being in nature grounds you. And the best part is, it’s free.

Whenever I’m preparing a new vision for my year or any creative project, I always start with a long solo walk. I take my journal, let the thoughts tumble out, and begin to find a clarity and direction again. Next step is to use my creativity to create a powerful vision board full of images that resonate with how I want to feel and who I want to be. Less of a to do list, more of an emotional reset. This works for me as it brings in the light, and more importantly keeps me inspired and motivated.

If you’re ready to gently clear the fog and get clear on what you want more of, my ‘Life in Colour Vision Board Masterclass’ is now on sale. I’m hosting on the 21st January, 7pm GMT (with a recorded replay available). Comment VB26 below and I’ll send you all the details.

Can’t wait to see what we can create together this year!
