The Great Indoors Podcast S2 Episode 4 Dublin Live Show Notes

selection 043 DFS

Welcome to Series 2, episode 4,  of the fortnightly interiors podcast The Great Indoors. This week Kate and I were treated to a jolly to Dublin courtesy of our sponsor DFS. We were put up in The Dean, Dublin which is a very swish hotel in the heart of the city and we had a lovely short stay in this vibrant and hospitable city. The top floor restaurant is amazing with rooftop views of the city, and the perfect place to watch the sun go down with a pint of Guinness. If you get to visit I highly recommend it.

The Great Indoors podcast is a fortnightly podcast that discusses interior design hosted by design experts Sophie Robinson and Kate Watson-Smyth

So it made total sense that we would kick off the live event, in front of an amazing audience of Ireland’s top influencers and media. They were an enthusiastic, passionate crowd and we couldn’t have wished for a warmer welcome. A big massive thank you for having us!

At an exclusive recording of The Great Indoors podcast, sponsored by DFS, which took place at the Dean Hotel, Dublin. Fans of TV presenter and designer Sophie Robinson, of The Great Interior Design Challenge, and best-selling author and journalist, Kate Watson-Smyth listened whilst they debated and guided them through the top trends and hottest topics from the home front.
Attendees enjoyed sparkling prosecco, great food and some amazing style tips. DFS have been trading successfully in Ireland for over five years now. With 50 years of experience, DFS has an unrivalled reputation for high-quality, hand-crafted sofas to suit every style, home, and budget, and has supplied sofas to thousands of homes in Ireland. This episode of the Great Indoors podcast, recorded in Dublin, will be available to download.

My room at The Dean looked like this. Lovely dark gentleman’s club style bedrooms but a nightmare to do your makeup in

Hotel design inspiration

First up Kate and I discussed, most fittingly, that we like to get a lot of our own design inspiration from hotels. Leading hotels (I’m not talking Holiday Inn here) go to a lot of trouble to create amazing interiors in which to delight their guests. We talked about the Soho House hotel group who have a very distinct style, so much so that their previous Design director Vicki Charles has gone to set up her own design studio, Charles and Co, in New York with Julia Corden (wife of James- Kate W-S knows all the gossip). They are reportedly doing the new home of Prince Harry and Megan, so watch that space!

Will Harry and Megan be opting for the luxe country house look that the Soho Farmhouse is famous for?

Fabrics and furnishings

Next up we talked about one of my most favourite topics, cushions! I’m a maximalist so love to jostle lots of patterns and styles together. How to mix pattern is something I get asked a lot, and Kate and I shared our different approaches. Mine is for as many cushions in different patterns as you can fit on the sofa, and Kate would prefer a patterned sofa with plain cushions. So its all up for grabs. A few guidelines though; if you are mixing monochrome cushions make sure you have plenty of texture to keep things interesting and if you are mixing prints, switch up the scales and make sure you use a cohesive palette to make it all make sense. I did a YouTube tutorial on just that here, so do check it out.

Interior designer and self confessed colour queen Sophie Robinson discusses

I love to clash patterns and the more disparate the better. A strong colour palette helps it to all hang together, as shown in a picture of my old flat in Brighton

We also talked about how to save money when buying fabrics as soft furnishings are a large part of any room budget. I like to push the boat out and splurge on a designer fabric for roman blinds as you can be economical with the meterage. And then I have Chambray stripe ready-mades in my own living room that I picked up in the sale from Habitat. I got the must-have luxurious feel by sewing two pairs together and changing the eyelet header for a pencil pleat to they look full and plentiful. You can have a gander over on my Instagram account here.

My habitat ready made curtains were sewn togther to make them wide and luxurious enough for my window

How to plan the dining room

In a recent interview, Mary Berry declared that the dining room was dead, and she was knocking down walls in her new house, to bring the dining table into the kitchen. When we polled our live audience in Dublin it was massively in favour of having the dining room within the kitchen. My recent project at home has been to convert our dining room into an office but I’ve done it in such a way that it can be switched back again for when we have big family get-togethers like Christmas and Easter. Kate is more conventional and has her dining table in the kitchen, which also doubles up as her place of work. And what a lovely space it is too!

We had such a wonderful time recording the podcast in Dublin and sharing the interior design love that this city really has. We have also had a lovely write up in the Irish Independent that you can read here. We particularly love the review

“…like two peas in a podcast. They’re rowdy, funny, and extremely well-informed, their casts are a unique mixture of lively banter and practical advice, and they don’t always agree. Especially about cushions, a topic of conversation that often ends up as the verbal equivalent of a pillow fight. What more could you ask from a podcast?”

Kate and I were even invited onto Ireland AM the live breakfast show. I demonstrated how not to place a cushion.

Finally, before we go we also got invited to talk cushions and all things interiors on live breakfast show Ireland FM. We had a blast and if you fancy one too, here is the link to watch the show.

I’d like to thank our sponsor DFS for supporting this series and Kate Taylor for producing the podcast and coming on the road with us to manage a rowdy Irish crowd! Hope they didn’t blow your headphones! For more podcasts, you can catch up on my podcast page here or better still subscribe so you never miss an episode.

If your outdoor space is feeling a little lack lustre, the quickest way to bring it to life is through colour, pattern and personality. You don’t need a full redesign. Just a few joyful prints, some feel good colour and you instantly shift the mood.

From bold tasseled parasols and squishy bench pads to playful outdoor lighting and characterful wall décor, my collection with @Dunelmuk is designed to make it easy and affordable. Whether you’ve got a tiny city terrace or a sprawling country garden, these are the pieces that instantly elevate a space and make it feel special.

I had so much fun creating this range, inspired by my travels to Marrakech, and seeing it come to life in real homes and gardens is always the best bit.

If you’re near Brighton, you can experience it in person as part of the Brighton Festival.
My best friend Sophie is opening her home for Artists Open Houses on the 8th, 9th, 10th May
from 11–4pm. Drop her a DM for details @sophieabbottartist

Otherwise, you know where to go… pop into your local Dunelm or shop online and bring a little joy outdoors this bank holiday.

It’s Interior Design Masters episode 2 and this we It’s Interior Design Masters episode 2 and this week things got romantic!

The task was castle hotel bedrooms, all centred around a “romantic retreat” brief… and what I love most is how wildly different each interpretation turned out. Some designers ran with the medieval theme while others left it at the turret and went full whack whimsy. From bold and playful to soft and serene, it’s a showcase of diverse design aesthetics and proof that one style certainly doesn’t fit all.

As always, it’s not all just paint and pillows. Add in 4m-high ceilings, tricky stone mullion windows and some very traditional furniture that needed a fresh twist, and it’s no small feat. Once again I take my hat off to the amateur designers and am in awe of their creativity and ingenuity given the time and budget constraints.

A little silliness, a little colour, a little faff A little silliness, a little colour, a little faffing … and suddenly life feels more beautiful 🌸

For me, it’s never just been about how my home looks. It’s how it feels to live in it. This is your reminder that creating a beautiful life isn’t about big, grand gestures… it’s built in the small, whimsical moments you make for yourself every day ✨
AD It takes an army to bring a collection together AD It takes an army to bring a collection together, and here is a sneak behind the scenes for my latest collection from @dunelmuk.

The team is made up of photographer, stylists, art director, a team of PR and marketing folk, the social media crew, set builders, couriers, make up artists and me. Its a really busy day where we take over a location house and bring in flats for wall colour, hang pendant lights on tripods, steam bedlinen, plump pillows and arrange flowers. Its a real creative whirlwind and I feel blessed that I get to work with the best in the business. I’ve created three homewares collection with Dunelm and they have been just the best team of people to collaborate with, so this really is a happy reminder. I’m so proud of everything we have achieved, bringing my particular take on maximalism to your high street, so do check it all out in store and online while stocks last.

I’ve got another shoot, this time for my own exclusive collection at my house this week, ready for my AW ‘26 collection that will be launching very soon! Pinch me! And make sure you watch this space.
Interior Design Masters is BACK and it’s come out Interior Design Masters is BACK and it’s come out swinging…

Take ten bold new designers and give them a row of iconic British beach huts, with a first challenge that demands serious confidence. To decorate them in your signature style demands no playing it safe here.

The talent this year is strong. What I enjoyed was the brilliant mix of ideas, confidence and creativity. It’s a reminder that there is no one way to design a beautiful space… and that’s exactly what makes it so exciting.

Now I need to know…

Who would have won Stand Out Space for you?
Which beach hut are you mentally moving into?
And whose ideas are you absolutely stealing for your own home?

Watch @interiordesignmasters with @chattyman on BBC One and @bbciplayer Tuesdays at 8pm… then come straight back here and let’s get into it 👀

The colours you love say everything about you and to you. It’s deeply personal and I’m passionate about helping people find their own colour palette. But it starts with listening to your heart. So what is your home saying to you?
A small room loves a deep rich dark colour. I knew A small room loves a deep rich dark colour. I knew that but my goodness the opinions!

If you struggle to block out the well meant advise this is your sign to follow your gut and do what you want, it’s your house!

This small room was once a cramped kitchen until we switched things up and made it our cosy TV Snug. I drenched the walls in the dark leathery red and its created a really atmospheric cocooning feeling, perfect for cosy movie night and box set binges. The jewel bright fabrics really pop too which is why I love it more!
