Trend: Spring time pastels living room

Spring Sophie on armchair

Spring is such a favourite time of year. Like the turning of the New Year it’s a great time to plan new beginnings, but unlike January, this time of year brings bluer skies, longer days and the promise of warm weather. So I for one feel more motivated to get things done!

This week I was invited by ITV’s This Morning to do a makeover on their Green Room with a Spring theme, so I picked one of the hottest trends in interiors right now, for powder soft pastels and spring like bloom motifs. This look works great in any vintage interior but I think the modern fresh shades work well in a contemporary scheme too. I focused on the accessories so you can feel you can update your existing interior. These are my key ways to freshen up your home this Spring. Read to the end as I’ve posted all the shopping below.

I always associate Spring with decorating. With the Easter bank holidays approaching it’s a great time to tackle a new colour scheme. In this one, rather than wallpaper I’ve gone for a fresh hue on the walls. Paint is really one of the most transformational ways to update your home. And the quickest and easiest! A clever little trick is to colour block rather than use the same colour on all four walls. You might pick one wall out in a complimentary colour, or as I’ve done here paint a block mid wall in order to frame a collection of pictures.

One of my favourite ways to add pattern and a fresh twist to a scheme is with a signature armchair. I’m loving this one from Marks and Spencers. I’m crazy for patterned upholstery but having a whole sofa in a print is some commitment. But a patterned chair is all you need to add the interest.

Anyone who follows this blog will know I’m potty for cushions. I own far too many its out of control! But with the high street producing such affordable and great designs it’s not out of the question to trck up your interior seasonally. Say soft pastel cushions in Spring and then deep velvet ones when summer turns to Autumn. My advise is to always mix a medley of patterns with plains for a balanced display.

A fresh new rug on the floor is another easy and accessible way to transform the look. In the spirit of Spring cleaning you could have your carpets or existing rugs cleaned., that can be pretty transformational in itself! Or go for a fresh new bold design. A colourful rug can really anchor the room and pull your colourscheme together. I love this painterly abstract deisgn by Bluebell Gray.

There are so many fabulous Spring inspired accessories around on the high street right now which makes it really affordable to create a new display. I’m loving all the painterly spring bloom motifs. Room scent is another great way to freshen up your home that’s often really overlooked. I’d go for a Spring time smell that’s fresh and invigorating this time of year.

Spring flowers in vintage vases

Finally the onset of Spring brings bucket full of blooms into the shops. Daffoldils, Narcissi, Hyacinth, Anemones, Rununculas, Tulips and Pussy willow are all amongst my favourites. My stylist tip is to be really generous. Buy armfuls and pack them into a selection of vintage cut glasss vases. Rather than mix them up they look really impactful if you group them as flower type per vase in blocks of colours.

Not going to lie, this might be one of my proudest Not going to lie, this might be one of my proudest makeovers ever…
My Dad and Mary’s modern French villa was all beige tiles, white walls and zero personality. So I did what I do best: turned it into a technicolour dreamscape inspired by the countryside views outside those gorgeous bifold doors.

Inspired by early autumn leaves, emerald green fields, and piercing blue skies we set about making the inside of their home feel as joyful as the outside … now imagine all that bottled up into wallpaper, fabrics, cushions and colour-drenched furniture.

If you’ve ever thought bold colour overwhelming or that pattern was too much for open-plan spaces… this one’s for you. Because colour and pattern sings in nature, and it can work just as well in your home decor.

All wallpapers, rug and cushion fabrics are from my collection with @harlequinfw. Painting by @sophieabbottartist

End of January check-in… and yes, the struggle to End of January check-in… and yes, the struggle to stay joyful is very real right now. Dark mornings, grey skies, energy running low.

That’s exactly why our homes matter so much at this time of year. They are our sanctuary. The place that should lift your mood, calm your nervous system and make you feel held when the outside world feels a bit, how can I put this...relentless. And this isn’t just a feeling or a design philosophy. It’s backed up by science. Research shows that colour, light, beauty and nature in our homes have a direct impact on mood, wellbeing and happiness. Small, intentional changes really can shift how you feel day to day.

I’d love to know… what brings you the most joy in your home right now? A colour, a room, a plant, a view, a ritual? Share it in the comments 💛

And if you’re ready to go deeper, my big January Sale ends this week.
