Trend: How to design a Tropical bedroom

Tropical bedroom design by Sophie Robinson

I’m just so in love with all the flamboyant tropical merchandise that’s hitting the shops this spring. We’re seeing pineapples and parrot’s everywhere and some vibrant green jungle green prints. Cheese plants are back in vogue, and I never thought I’d say that! I designed this room for ITV’s This Morning. I had a Carte blanch so I was inspired by what’s on trend right now. I happened to have this month’s issue of Living Etc on my desk so I pinched that for inspiration. I need to think fast as I had less than a week to design and prop for it- as well as fit it around everything else!

So I started with pink for the walls. This colour is so fashionable the moment and is a perfect choice for bedrooms. It’s a soft and nurturing colour and very flattering on the skin. I’ve gone for a warm dusky rose pink called Nancy’s Blushes by Farrow and Ball and it compliments the plain pink bed linen by John Lewis perfectly. Then when it comes to choosing furniture I wanted the look to be less beach hut and more Palm Springs condo. So I’ve chosen this stunning high headboard bed and a pair of Biba Garbo side tables in mottled bronze mirror, both by House of Fraser. Other key elements include the Esmeralda chair from Mia Fleur, which has a lovely vintage twist, and the Harpa rattan chair from Habitat. Adding a wink of rattan is key to adding an authentic touch to this tropical look.

  1. Create a feature on one wall using a striking pattern. This amazing new design called Lemur Pink Tropical Fusion by the Graduate collection at Wallpapers Direct is a touch expensive at £125 a roll but in an average sized bedroom you’d only need a roll to do a feature panel. It’s also fantastic to support young graduate designers. I set it within a baton of wooden moulding, the sort of thing you’d buy for a dado rail, painted in with the wall colour. My other tip is to put your feature wallpaper behind the bed head. This way when you come to relax you don’t need to stare at the jazzy wallpaper at a time when you’re trying to relax.

  1. Choose a large statement rug. I think it’s nice to layer rugs in a bedroom so its super soft underfoot. A really large size will help to ground the room, it stops the bed looking like its floating in the room on itself. Get one big enough that you can get at least a third of the bed over it. This Stockholm rug from Ikea was perfect as it’s a whopping 250 x 350cm.
  2. Add an element of glamour with mirrored furniture and gold accessories. Pick gold lamps, brass pineapples and accessories and dot them throughout the room. I love this pineapple lamp from Graham and green in metallics and a teamed it with a dark green Malachite style drum shade.

  1. Go for plain bed linen, that doesn’t clash with the patterned wallpaper and then update the look with cushions and throws. You could buy a set of patterned bed linen too and ring the changes, there is loads of tropical prints on the high street this season by H&M, BHS and Marks and Spencer’s.
  1. Add some rattan into the scheme. As I had a large space to design within I chose this statement rattan chair from Habitat but I apprecaite it wouldn’t fit into te average sized bedroom! I love it, as it’s just a bit naughty in a 70’s porn film kind of way! I’ve also fallen in love with this collection of fantastic rattan mirrors from Graham and Green which really give the nod to the 60’s era and create a lovely focal point opposite the bed.

  1. For the tropical look to really work I feel you have to really layer up the plants. Houseplants have never been so fashionable but if you’re anything like me then fake is totally the way to go. I called in lots of fake plants from Ikea and some really stunning arrangements from Mia Fleur to create this jungle inspired look. You can even arrange them on a plant stand!

  1. You’ll notice throughout this scheme I have accessorised it with plenty of gold accessories and tropical motifs like parakeets and pineapples. For me this is the fun element if this trend, and stops interior design from taking itself too seriously! I Love this parakeet from House of Fraser.

Hi Sophie! Can you confirm whether you customized the bed with suds? I just called House of Fraser and they stock ‘Hepburn’ but not with studs. Thanks, Sheryl

Hi Sheryl. I didn’t customise the bed, it came with studs. It was lent to us from the press office, so maybe this style is yet to hit the shops. I’ll ask the press office for you

As always super talented design and I do love this, adore pink and green but not sure I could live with all that 70s vibe – is Uncle Albert in there somewhere?! I think this is a fab look for a lovely minimalist flat but perhaps a no go for an older house? Loving those bedside tables though, they really appeal to my magpie side.

There’s something for everyone in this room set. But I agree its very retro but I rather love the humour in that

Hi Sophie, I’m thinking about a similar scheme for my guest bedroom but I’m veering towards green on the walls rather than pink. What is the green you have used either side of the wallpaper? I’ve found a wallpaper with a large gold pineapple pattern so hopefully will convey a similar look! Thanks, Sarah

That’s according to a study by Sky Glass, the streaming TV from @sky_uk . I’ve been investigating the latest interior trends we are lusting after, and how our living rooms are changing- as we say goodbye to three piece suites, and hello to sustainable vintage furniture, statement rugs, wall prints and cosy-ing up the sofa with throws and cushions. As you can see I’m all over the trends! If you head over to the @sky_uk channel today, I’ll also be answering some interior design questions all about styling your TV. This is the first room we decorated after our reno This is the first room we decorated after our renovations. The entrance to your home creates the first impression. It’s also the room you walk into first thing in the morning and when you return home at the end of a long day. It needs to create the right welcome and what that feels like is hugely personal. For me I chose my favourite colours, this powerful cobalt blue has always been a colour I’m drawn to. My wardrobe is full of it. And the bright pink is another one that always makes me instantly happy. Together they are a striking combination and I think anyone who walks through my front door, immediately gets a sense of what I’m about. I’m passionate about creating interiors that authentically reflect the people who live there. Studying the psychology of colour made it so much easier for me, giving me a deeper understanding on the affects of colour and streamlining my process. If you’d like to know how to unlock your colour super power, join me for a free webinar this Wednesday evening (available to up for 48 hours after). My kitchen, the heart of my home. The smallest, da My kitchen, the heart of my home. The smallest, darkest room in the house with no view, but that’s old houses for you! You’ll often find the kitchen in the worst place. So to amp up the joy I chose a forest green (hunters green by @zoffanyfw) for the cabinets to mirror the woodland outside. We sourced reclaimed school science lab work tops and I wrapped the room in one of my favourite papers, Rubarber by @borastapeter. Tom put in retro fit underfloor heating and we used reclaimed terracotta tiles from @ca_pietra_ so the floor looks as old as the house but feels so warm! . For the ugliest darkest room in the house it’s become our favourite because of the colours, patterns and rustic textures.that’s the power of great interior design!
