Habitat launch flag ship store in Brighton with local artist collaboration

Brighton Artists at Habitat Sophie Abbott Lauri Hopkins and Becky Blair

Last week I was thrilled to be invited to the opening party of a new flagship Habitat store in my home town in Brighton. Now to let you into a secret, I’ve known about the opening for a while but am now thrilled to see my favourite high street retailer back in my hood. I was mildly devastated to see Habitat leave after it went into administration in 2011, which saw it close nearly all of it stores across the UK. But the brand is back and going from strength to strength, and with Kate Butler at the head of design there is plenty in store to delight in. Habitat believe in investing in the high street as people still need to touch and feel the products, something I couldn’t agree more with, so lets salute them for taking it on while other big giant retailers are falling to the wayside.

The brand New Habitat store Brighton is set over two spacious floors with plenty of furniture displays and accessories ready to take away.

To celebrate the launch, Adam Crudgington, head of PR at Habitat, who is completely marvellous and comes up with fantastic clever campaigns, got in touch with me to give me the inside track that the brand would be moving back to it’s South Coast heartland. Habitat are currently set to open just two new stores, one in Westfield in London and the second in Brighton. So it’s a pretty big deal! In order to celebrate the launch they wanted to collaborate with three local artists to design three iconic rugs that would be sold in limited edition through Habitat. Habitat have a long standing tradition of making lots of amazing products mostly due to their in house team which means they don’t just rely on buying. But one area thats always been strong for them is their collection of terrific rugs, I’ve invested in many myself over the years,  and Kate Butler wanted to draw on the expertise of her Indian manufactures to produce three very different designs that celebrated the different craftsmanship techniques.

As a designer based in Brighton, Adam asked me if I could recommend my favourite local colour loving artists and having given him my shortlist Habitat chose three, namely Sophie Abbott, Becky Blair and Lauri Hopkins. All three artists are based in central Brighton and their work very much encapsulates the vibrancy of this unique city. I think the results are simply mouth watering and the trouble I have is which one to choose!

The Artists and me!

I’m a massive fan of feature rugs and think they can really make a scheme. You can use the colours within the rug to pull a scheme together and all three of these designs create a really strong colour theme. The size of rug you go for is crucial and I always say to go as big as you can afford as that way they really anchor the room.

Artist Becky Blair sketches in watercolour and pastel. It was one of her sketches that she produces in preparation for her large and multi layered canvases that Habitat chose to make into a rug.

“The artwork for this project came from a collection of pastel drawings I sketched on the beaches along the under cliffs between Brighton and Saltdean. It’s a great area where locals get to escape the hustle and bustle of Brighton’s busier beaches. I used the pastels very playfully, enjoying the vibrancy of colour and softness of line to abstractly draw the shapes of people, rock pools and flora. This series of drawings has informed my latest paintings that recently exhibited as part of the Brighton Festival and will go on to be seen at my solo show this October in Perth, Australia.” Becky Blair

Artist Sophie Abbott uses plenty of colour soaked paintings are inspired by the south coast. From large seascapes to small rock pools her colour love is second to none.

“I spend a lot of time by the sea and seashore – swimming in it, photographing & sketching it, and really love the rock pools under the cliffs in Ovingdean (just past Brighton marina). This artwork is derived from sketches I produced in situ on the beach there. The inspiration for this painting is predominantly of rock pool formations, looking at the way they fit together like a jigsaw and the shapes in-between. I’m trying to convey the feeling of walking over them in bare feet, peering down into them, lost in the beauty of natural world. This rug will reflects all that I love about the seaside and living in Brighton.” Sophie Abbott

Artist Lauri Hopkins collabortaes with Habitat to design this rug called Nightswim, available from Habitat

Lauri works on collage and her abstract shapes work particularly well in this deep textured hand tufted rug.

“The original collage translated for this project is called Night Swim, and it was inspired by my memories of being a teenager in Brighton. The carefully chosen collection of colours and shapes floating on a dark background remind me of lots of Brighton teenage experiences; swimming in the sea in the dead of night. Dancing under the fractured disco lights in nightclubs. Shopping for eighties print t-shirts in the lanes. My best mates’ orange Fiat Panda. Dreaming of becoming artists as we walked home with the seagulls. It’s pure, joyful nostalgia.” Lauri Hopkins

Habitat will be continuing this project in Brighton each year, asking new Artists to work with Habitat’s own Design Studio on products that hero local talent and their creativity.  Meanwhile no new store opening are planned as yet. Brighton and Westfeild are trial stores so they’re waiting to see how these perform. They’re looking at which store formats are working best for Habitat alongside the digital channel at www.habitat.co.uk which will most probably be Mini Habitat stores and a selection of larger standalone stores in key cities. So stay tuned folks!

Blue skies, warmer air… it’s a sign your home is r Blue skies, warmer air… it’s a sign your home is ready for a little refresh

You don’t need a full spring makeover. I just make a few simple tweaks to shift the mood and bring that fresh, light energy indoors:

• Throw open the doors and windows and let the air flow through. It feels so good moving on that stagnant air
• Plump tired cushions, even give them a wash if they need it. My top tip is to swap the fillers for new ones if they are looking flat.
• Grow cheerful bulbs or pick up affordable Spring supermarket blooms and pop a display in every corner!
• Light a scented candle, pick a fresh floral note.
• Move the furniture and give everywhere a proper spring clean
• Restyle what you already own… trays, books, objects, my stackable wavy trays are perfect for a seasonal switch-up

So for now make small changes, but feel a big shift. Your home, but lighter, brighter, and ready for the season. Let me know how you love to refresh your home for Spring in the comments.

My Big Spring wardrobe sale is now LIVE on @thesecondrow_ . 💃 it’s been quite cathartic pulling out all the images that show me wearing all the outfits, a few of which I’ve posted here. Many many happy memories and I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to express my love of colour, not just through my interiors but my fashion too. There are some real showstoppers from my various TV appearances, events, retreats and more.

The last couple of years have been very cathartic to say the least, and the result is I’m now a couple of dress sizes lighter, hence the big wardrobe edit. These clothes are size 12-14 and i’m 5’4”. I hope you see something you like, I’m excited to think they will go on to make someone else feel as fabulous as I did ❤️

I’ve adored these clothes, but it’s time to pass them on and make space for what’s next. Very April energy… fresh start, declutter, a little reinvention.

If you’ve ever messaged me asking “where is that dress from?” this is your moment.

10 months ago I started training with @teamyo_weight_training , three mornings a week, 7–8am. No faff… just me, an iPad and consistently showing up.

Let’s be honest, home gym equipment is not my vibe. Big, black, bulky… a visual assault. So I kept it simple. A yoga mat, an iPad stand and a barbell. I used the plates as free weights to begin with, then as my commitment grew, I’ve built up a small collection of dumbbells. All arranged on a rack out of eye line.

I’m always here for the pretty pictures but your home should support your life and when your environment makes things easy, you’re far more likely to stick with good habits. This has been one of the most consistent things I’ve ever done, mostly because it’s been made easy. I feel stronger, leaner, more energised… and it’s all happened in this one small corner of my home.

@teamyo_weight_training is starting a new 8 week programme on Monday 13th called The Shred and I’m going again. My focus is building muscle and shifting a little more body fat… hello flatter tummy I know your’e under there!

I’m not being paid to share this, I just genuinely rate her and the way she expertly coaches mid life women. She’s kindly offered my community £50 off the programme, which makes it just £200 for 8 weeks of online training and bespoke nutrition support. Comment SHRED and we’ll send you the link.

If your home has a corner… you’ve got everything you need. Who’s with me? 💪
Take a tour of my Dads colourful home in the Lot e Take a tour of my Dads colourful home in the Lot et Garonne in France, situated on the river which inspired the colourful interior design.

I worked with Dad and Mary on the design as they wanted to keep it feeling light and spacious and yet still inject their colourful personalities. The wallpapers they chose are from from my collection with @harlequinfw and you’ll spot quite a few accessories from my collection with @dunelmuk . It’s wonderful to see them enjoy my designs and i’ve enjoyed helping them get it just how they wanted it.

But now it’s time to say farewell, while they plan to return to england. The house has just gone on the market with @nikkihomefinder @beauxvillagesimmobilierfr and has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a pool and hot tub and breath taking views across the Aquitaine fields. Take the boat up stream and your in Eymet for lunch.

We’ve certainly enjoyed our summers here.

If you’re interested drop me a DM and I’ll send you the link!
