Hoping to help beat the winter blues

Here is the UK it’s been rain all week and that combined with spending half term in doors without the usual outlets for entertainment means that glum feeling is creeping in! Aren’t we all missing summer!

I can feel the winter blues taking hold as I wish for another minute in bed in the morning or cannot wait for my son to fall asleep at 8 so I can go to bed myself! I’m aware that I’ve got hiding under the duvet feeling of retreat seeping in and I recognise that I need to nip it in the bud!

So, I’m taking action, and I’m hoping that if you feel any way the same way as me, then this will give you a little boost and inspiration.

Swimming in the ice cold sea in Brighton with my girlfriends is life affirming stuff!

First up I’m diving into the WHM. I’ve known about Wim Hof and the life affirming power of cold-water therapy but at this time of year of year it feels SO WRONG! But a recent episode of Fearne Cottons podcast Happy Place, has really ignited me. She interviews Wim Hof and his strive to help people feel ‘Happy, Healthy and Strong’. It really called out to me as I love how it sounds so simple. As a result of the podcast I’ve been taking a cold shower every day for the past 10 days and it has been absolutely transformational. It gives me a boost of the feel-good vibes, energises me and lifts my mood for the day ahead. Its actual voodoo and it works! I’ve even got my husband and my Mum in on the cold shower action.

The Beach Box Spa in Brighton is a super cool place to hang out all year round

My father in law suffers from bouts of depression and has been standing under the garden hose every day all year round. I just thought he was eccentric, but I can now fully understand what he has been up to and the incredible benefits to his mental state of mind. I have an old bath that we have just pulled out of storage and I’m going to find it a spot in the garden, so I can fill it with lovely ice-cold water for the ultimate plunge! If this is something you have tried, from sea swimming to wild water swimming, I’d love to hear know more. I’ve taken a few trips into Brighton, but the sea is getting rougher now so on the search for calmer waters. The Beach Box Spa is the best of both worlds as you can hang out getting hot, and then plunge into either the cold sea of their plunge pool! It’s such a cool design with fre pits, horse boxes that have been converted into wood fired sauna’s, cold showers and natural beauty treatments. I’m making it a promise to go once a month!

A moon lit plunge in the pool

My mood boosting mission has also involved getting the house in order and having a monumental house sort out. I feel having a thorough re-organise and clutter clearance is best done at least twice a year and it seems to fall energetically in line with Spring and Autumn, probably because the change in season makes us want to pack away unseasonal clothes and get everything ship shape.

I absolutely hate having a sort out- I find it so uncomfortable. The energy it takes me to filter through everything, assessing what to keep and what to pass on is such an energy drain, every bone in my body resists it! And then there is the sorting, piling, bagging up and taking things to the charity shop or organising to sell them online. It’s so time consuming! But oh-so worth it! There is always the motivation at the back of my mind that the items I choose to pass on will be useful to someone else. I use a mixture of charity shops and facebook market place and Ebay to distribute all my unwanted stuff. Facebook market place is great as I advertise it for free and it gets it gone in a jiffy!

Once you have your drawers neat and orderly and have made room in the cupboards once more for things to be stored tidily, then all is well in the world! Sitting back and admiring your well organised closet or stylish shelves is just pure pleasure!

Another mood boosting hack has been continuing with my weekly weight training online with Team Yo and I’ve found this an amazing way to keep my anxiety at bay. I’ve never been a natural match for cardio and so the methodical way of weight training is almost like a meditation and I love how it makes my body feel! Trying to keep up with hitting 10K steps a day is the second part of keeping my mind body and soul feel good. This is the biggest challenge as since the weather has turned grim it’s not so easy to get out. But once you do then nature really rewards you! I love the autumn landscape as the leaves on the trees turn to their rich auburns, gold and russets. And if the sun dares to come out the effect is glorious! And therin lies another way to left your spirits- getting out in the fresh air and taking in the glory that is the changing seasons is one of my favourite things to do.

Let me know your mood boosting hacks for staying strong happy and healthy in the comments below. Together we can do this!

Thanks Sophie! These all sound like great ideas. I too have noticed the warm, comfy comforter calling my name with the lessening of the daylight. And trying to banish any anxiety about our national election (I’m in the SF bay area, US) has also had me start pumping weights with a new online zoom strength training course. I am digging out my tea stash and maybe making some buckwheat pancakes to celebrate the cooler weather this weekend. Kudos to you for sharing your thoughts and ideas on banishing the fall blahs!

I love all these ideas too- here’s to drinking tea, eating pancakes inbetween lifting weights!

One of the things that helps me is to watch re-runs of Nigella. All those sparkly lights in her house makes me yearn for dark nights so I can do the same.

No decorations are allowed in the house until the No decorations are allowed in the house until the first of December and we start the morning with Arthur’s advent Calender! That’s as far as I’ve got in the hallway I’ll be honest as this grid post is a hark back to a previous year. But I’ll be decorating it the same way I do every year. I like to use a mixture of colourful baubles I’ve collected over the years, paper honeycomb balls for maximum wow and plenty of foliage. I keep the ribbons year on year and rarely buy anything new. The repeated tradition is part of the charm.
On the podcast @mad_about_the_house and I talk all things Thrifty Christmas. It’s been a really challenging year for most so we invited guests @rocketandsquash and @hazelgardinerdesign to share their money saving ideas to make sure you don’t bust the bank account and yet still have a lovely treaty time. Ed has some lovely ideas for feasting around Christmas that crucially cuts down on waste and avoids unnecessary expensive ingredients. And Hazel loves to use foraged foliage in her floral displays so has plenty of ideas on that.
It’s a peach of a show jam packed with creative inspiration. Listen on your podcast app, and why not leave a comment below on how you will be being thrifty this Christmas 👇

Who is looking forward to the weekend! 🙌 Welc Who is looking forward to the weekend! 🙌

Welcome to a rare tour of my home! Since every room looked tidy, I grabbed my phone to show you around.

You can see how I have lots of colour and pattern in every room but still the house has flow. I use the same palette of colours through which helps make it all hang together. But it takes more than that to make a maximalist home sing. Repeating the same materials, design motifs, styles and shapes helps to create a feeling of cohesion.

For the ultimate insight into how to decorate in a way that supports you emotionally, flexes your creativity and leaves you loving your home, check out my interior design school where I teach you everything you need to know.

- how to harmonise colours
- How to plan and budget
- How to source all the materials

This is the perfect time of year to up level your This is the perfect time of year to up level your bedding. With the autumn chill on its way I’d rather hike up the tog count than whack up the central heating.

Beautiful bedding and linen is the ultimate luxury and at this time in my life 👵🏻 my bed is up there as my absolute favourite place to be and my sleep is honestly my favourite pastime! So making it the most comforting, soothing, replenishing experience possible is my priority. 😴

I recently up-levelled my duvet and pillows to @naturalmatuk goose down products and here is my unbiased review. The pillows are the like sleeping on an actual cloud! Along with the 9 tog duvet I’ll stay cosy all winter, and leave the thermostat turned down. @naturalmatuk only use natural, sustainable materials, organic cotton and responsibly sourced feathers, which all support a good nights sleep. With a hectic lifestyle, my bed is my ultimate sanctuary 🥱

What’s your self care routine and secret to the perfect pampered night sleep?

What a dress! When @benjaminfoxdressmaker spotted What a dress! When @benjaminfoxdressmaker spotted my new collection with @harlequinfw they wanted to make a dress in it! Now I actually match my decor!

This dress shape is so perfect. I love the big sleeves, that goes so well with a fine knit underneath and the long gathered skirt looks perfect with boots, both of which I bought recently at @cosstores . Team with my signature big earrings ( these are old ones from @anthropologieeu ) and I feel a million dollars! Happy Monday folks! We can do this 👊

I hosted an event this week to show off all the ha I hosted an event this week to show off all the hard work we’ve done in the house and showcase the new collection with @harlequinfw . It was a wonderful opportunity to fill the house with laughter, great conversation and celebrate our mutual love of colour! Since the pandemic I work more and more from home and it felt good to open the door and let people in.

The guest list was a mix of writers, artists, gardeners, cooks, designers and fashion stylists but one thing we have in common is embracing the joy of colour and celebrating how our homes are the foundation for a happy and fulfilling life.

However getting the house ready for such a group of discerning eyes was rather exhausting! I had to hide under the duvet yesterday! But I’m so grateful to everyone who came, their positivity and inspiration. Most of whom I met here on instagram. This is a special place to make like minded connections, yet it was great to actually have an excuse to get together in real life!

And this weekend Tom and are are celebrating not doing any house DIY for the first time in ages!

Special Thanks to @mad_about_the_house @erica_davies @hillhousevintage @andrea_childs_journo @theottohouse @clairevallis @michelleogundehin @mollymahonblockprinting @sophieabbottartist @gemswholesomekitchen @edwardrobinsonid @dahliabeach for making it such a wonderful day

#AD Admit it! I can’t be the only one beginning #AD Admit it! I can’t be the only one beginning to plan for Christmas. Conversations about the menu for the big day has started with gusto in my family. But my focus is always around creating a magical table setting. This year I’ll be incorporating these classic Christmas tree plates from @by_spode that set the festive scene without the need to add loads of other fiddly decorations. I’m all about maximum impact, minimum effort this time of year, and I love how this traditional design (85 years old this year) is the perfect touch of nostalgia to accompany my bright Paper straw stripe tablecloth and colourful gloss candle sticks. I then just add simple flowers by snipping some hydrangea heads and popping them in tumblers dotted along the table. Finally bring it all to life with plenty of candlelight. And voila, it’s the perfect table setting for a fantastical festive celebration. Oh, how I wish the Christmas lunch was this easy to prepare!

👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Cushions have long been an obsession of mine and I’m so thrilled with this capsule collection for @johnlewis because it combines all the pattern and colour so you can get an instant hit of maximalist spirit by creating any combination that works for you. There is the iconic Sherbert stripe, sitting amongst luxurious embroidered designs and heavily patterned velvets. My personal favourite is the deeply colourful jewel bug design🪲 Which ones yours?!
