Are you an Autumn Personality?

Autumn tree 1

When I did a poll on my recent Instagram Stories, the Habitat seasonal room set that got the most votes was Autumn, but only by a smidge! It was actually pretty evenly matched across the four seasons, which just goes to show this really works! No matter what the time of year or what paint colour is in vogue, people have a real pull towards their Seasonal personality. If you’re not sure which one you are yet, read on! (you can catch up on posts Spring here and Summer here too, if you missed them).

Autumn is an exciting time of year- like Spring it’s another season of quick change and a burst of activity. The landscape quickly becomes striking and intense. Leaves change to the most amazing intense fiery reds and burnt oranges, often set against rich blue skies. It’s harvest time too so a real season of abundance as activity steps up a pace to get everything prepared; chop the logs, clear the garden, light bonfires and generally get the house in order ready for the long forthcoming winter.

Autumn personalities love the feather their nest in cosy feel-good fabrics and their flamboyant personality makes them a lover of plenty of print

Like Spring, Autumn personalities are externally motivated and perceived to be busy people. They are typically fiery, full of passion, integrity and drive, and often with a cause! They have flamboyant outgoing personalities and are often fun to be around along as you they don’t get on their soap box!

The autumn personality, according to Colour psychologfy loves a cosy and homely vibe. A ricj velvet sofa and darl walls fits the bill perfectly.Like the landscape, an Autumn interior will favour those intense colours that have a real richness and warmth to them. But don’t just think of the clichéd autumn colours being just the russets and the olive greens. With the seasonal personalities you have all colours (apart from Black, that’s a winter colour only) but in different tones. Autumn colours have a jewel like quality to them and patterns will feel richly detailed. Their love of travel and the arts means they’ll be drawn to hand made and artisan so hammered metal, crewel-work, block printing and hand knotted rugs will all find a place in an Autumn interior.

te autumn interior has a handmade feel

Texture is a key factor to the autumn interior, from hammered gold, to hand thrown ceramics and deep pile rugs

They are big lovers of nature and you’ll see this reflected in their home with the choice of materials they use to furnish it; wood, exposed stone and brick, cotton, jute and pottery and anything organic. They love to celebrate craftsmanship so objects with often have the thumbprint of the handmade on them.

Autumn personalities love to celebrate the handmade and so artisan objects are often in their design schemes

Autumn personality love education so they’ll definitely have a library of books in their home but they have to be careful their collecting tendencies don’t break into hoarding! Ultimately they love a layered look as they love to make a house feel homely, warm, cosy and inviting. Their love of heritage means they’ll feel most at home in a period property and will fill it with vintage and up-cycled items. Rarely inspired by trends they’ll look to the past for inspiration.

The autumn personailty interior design scheme according to Colour psychgology is rich and intense

You can shop for this look over on the Habitat website were everything is listed here. To find out more about Colour Psychology and how to create your own authentic interior design scheme why not sign up for one of my forthcoming Colour workshops here.

It takes a village to make a collection… and thank It takes a village to make a collection… and thankfully mine is full of ridiculously talented people.

From the designers and makers to the photographers, stylists and glam squad, this shoot was the grand finale after months of hard work. My favourite bit? Seeing everything come together in front of the camera.

This is my very first solo bed linen and cushion collection and I honestly can’t wait to share it with you.

One of the questions I’m asked more than any other One of the questions I’m asked more than any other is, “How do you choose the right paint colour?” My answer is always the same… please don’t rely on those tiny paint cards! They’re simply too small to judge a colour properly.

For my mum’s annexe makeover, we started with the inspiration, not the paint chart. She wanted to bring the magic of her garden indoors, so green was an obvious choice. I suggested introducing pink too because it’s one of my favourite colour combinations and always feels fresh and uplifting.

Once we’d shortlisted a few shades, we ordered tester pots and painted large A3 swatches. Trust me, this one simple trick will save you a lot of expensive decorating mistakes. Tape the samples to the wall, move them around the room and compare them together in different light before making your final decision.

We also used a beautiful painting by @sophieabbottartist to refine the palette. I love building colour schemes from artwork because the colours have already been thoughtfully brought together.

The final colours? Slaked Lime, Pea Green and Hellebore by @littlegreenepaintcompany

Now it’s time to get the paint on the walls… come back soon to see the transformation.
June has been one of those months that fills your June has been one of those months that fills your creative cup. From inspiring days wandering London’s galleries and catching up with the design world at WOW!house and the Maison&Objet dinner at The Mandrake not to mention the coming together of my two favourite hotels in a design collaboration . But the summer heat called for slower moments with long lunches in the garden, sea swims and soaking up the sunshine. A beautiful reminder that inspiration often comes from balancing creativity with rest.

Marrakech is one of my greatest creative inspirati Marrakech is one of my greatest creative inspirations and one of the best places in the world to shop if you love colour, craft and beautiful things that tell a story. I’ve been visiting for years, leading retreats and filling embarrassingly large amounts of luggage, and I still come home buzzing every single time.

This city has never subscribed to the idea that less is more. It is pure, glorious, unapologetic abundance and if you are a maximalist at heart it will feel like coming home.

Swipe for my little black book of favourite shops, rug dealers, ceramicists, fragrance makers spontaneous finds - the places I return to again and again and recommend to everyone who asks.

And yes - bring an extra suitcase and fill it with things that just make you smile!! You will not regret it.
